Summer Cooking Creations

I've been cooking a lot over the past few months. Summer is a great time for a chef - tons of fruits and vegetables are in season and it's a good time for light, healthy dishes. Here are some of my favorites.

Adventures in Traverse City and Lake Leelenau

I recently got to spend a really nice weekend with friends up in Traverse City and the nearby Lake Leelenau. It's an idyllic location for Michigan summer weekend, complete with cool natural lakes and upscale eateries.

Our cottage was right on Lake Leelenau, with a small path going right down to the water. We had a pontoon boat and two jet skis (which I hadn't ridden before), and we spent a few exhilarating hours crashing around the choppy waves. Just the view from the back porch at sunset was worth the three-and-a-half hour drive.

During the day we went downtown to Traverse City, a cool town with a distinctive feeling for tourism. Between the locally-made wines and candies, foodie-influenced restaurants, and breweries serving up local food and drinks, there was plenty to do - and I racked up about a hundred points on foursquare, thank you very much.

We took a short tour around to the local wineries where we sampled some more of the local fare. Shady Lane Winery had a lot of rosé wines - which aren't always my favorite - but the servers at the tasting bar were engaging with stories about the farm and their own experiences living "up north" in the winter.

Black Star Farms provided an additional treat with their locally-made Raclette cheese, which packs a nutty cheddar punch that pairs well with both white and red varietals. They also had some interesting dessert wines that I'm sure contributed to my 6:00pm hangover.

All in all it was a great trip and I can't wait to go back!

3 Blogs You Should Start Reading

For anyone working with the web or other technology, it really pays off to keep up with current news and trends in your industry. The interesting thing about developing websites is the different aspects that need to be taken in to account to build a successful site: marketing, design, coding, writing, public relations... the list goes on and on.

I've found these three blogs to be both useful and interesting in my day-to-day work, and I think you will too.

Signal vs. Noise

This blog covers a lot of topics, but it's core is all about business culture. Who you are and what you do are nothing compared to how you treat your customers and how you work together with the people in your company.

Mashable

Any news that's even remotely related to social media usually finds its way in to Mashable. While the volume of posts can be overwhelming (expect 20+ Twitter updates per day) there are always a few gems that sparkle through the rough.

Seth Godin's Blog

Seth is a marketing guru and relentless self promoter. He's written a bunch of books and coined some industry terms, but what's interesting are his daily quips on a variety of subjects that all relate to marketing in one way or another.

Drupal 7 First Impressions

I just finished installing an alpha version of Drupal 7 and I'm already impressed with its improved interface and overall user experience design for administrators.

Drupal 7 Default Home Page

This screenshot shows the default home page for a logged in user. The first thing to notice is the new admin menu (in the black and gray bars at the top of the page). I've been using the Administration Menu module on all of my Drupal 6.x sites, so it's great to see this feature included as part of the Drupal 7 default install.

The other important new feature is the shortcuts menu. This extension to the admin menu lets each user create and edit their own shortcuts.

Drupal 7 Admin Screen

Like other menus, the shortcuts menu can be changed with a drag-and-drop interface. Each administration page (sample shown above) has a small icon (+) next to its name that adds that page to the shortcuts menu.

The push for usability in Drupal 7 is apparent from the first few minutes of use. Even though it's still in alpha mode, I think we can expect some really useful features to appear once the first official version is released.

Top 5 Lessons from REwork

I just finished reading REwork by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hannson. Quick background: the writers of this book founded 37signals, a company that makes an amazing project management tool called Basecamp. 37signals not only makes great products, they also have an amazing work culture that comes through in their blog and other social media outputs.

I've already read Getting Real, their previous book (available online for free) which I liked. For me, there's something more satisfying about holding and reading a book than reading on a screen. Either way, here's my top 5 lessons learned from REwork:

5. Ignore the details early on

This is always my problem - I think about all the cool features and tweaks before thinking about the core of whatever I'm working on (usually a website).

4. Emulate chefs

I love that they mentioned Kitchen Nightmares - a great show about running a restaurant with lessons that apply to almost any business

3. How to say you're sorry

Apologizing is something that almost all companies get wrong - "We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused" is the worst way to make your customers feel better

2. Send people home at five

Agreed!

1. Start making something

This chapter inspired me to, well, start making something. Over the past few months I've had a ton of ideas for a project and after reading this chapter I finally started it. Since I'm in the early stages, I'm trying to really focus on the core concepts and leave the details for later. It's tough, but it's happening... and that's better than just planning.
